Preparatory meeting for the follow-up IRRS mission is underway

On 18–19 May 2026, the preparatory meeting for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) Follow-up mission is taking place at the premises of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (ÚJD SR). The role of an IRRS mission is to conduct a peer review based on IAEA safety standards.

The IRRS Follow-up mission follows the initial IRRS mission that took place in Slovakia in September 2022 and reviewed the regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety in Slovakia against IAEA safety standards. In the final report, the mission also identified findings – recommendations and suggestions for further improvements – which were reflected in the Action Plan for addressing measures from the IRRS mission in the Slovak Republic in 2022 (Action Plan), approved by Resolution of the Government of the Slovak Republic No. 221/2024 of April 17, 2024.

Slovakia invited a follow-up IRRS mission to evaluate progress in implementing the findings of the 2022 mission. The aim of the preparatory meeting is to present the current status of the implementation of the Action Plan to the IRRS Team Leads – experts from IAEA member states and IAEA representatives, while at the same time agreeing on the details of the follow-up mission itself, which will take place in Slovakia in November 2026.

In addition to the ÚJD SR, representatives of the Ministry of Transport of the SR, the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the SR, the Ministry of the Interior of the SR, the Ministry of Health of the SR, the National Labour Inspectorate and the Public Health Authority of the SR are participating in the preparation of the follow-up IRRS mission in Slovakia.

Note: The IAEA IRRS missions are invited by Member States on a voluntary basis, in a spirit of openness and transparency. These assessments of the legislative, supervisory and organizational infrastructure are aimed at strengthening and improving the national framework of the IAEA Member States. They represent a mechanism for mutual learning and represent an opportunity for the exchange of expertise, experience and best practices. Assessments contribute to the harmonization of supervisory activities in IAEA member countries. The Mission’s expert teams are established and deployed to the host country by the IAEA.
