Emergency Exercises
The Emergency Staff of the ÚJD SR regularly carries out trainings and exercises in order to check the emergency preparedness of its staff. The units of the Emergency Staff of the ÚJD SR carry out annual training exercises combined with training sessions. In addition, the Authority as a whole, through its emergency staff, participates in emergency response organisation exercises at the Bohunice and Mochovce sites. These exercises also aim to test the functionality of the authorisation holder’s emergency preparedness. The exercises consist of solving tasks and operations during simulated events that approximate as closely as possible the response to a real event.
The emergency exercises are aimed at testing the emergency preparedness functionality of license holders and government authorities at local, regional and national levels. Joint exercises between license holders and national administrations are also a form of checking the suitability and sufficiency of the emergency preparedness training system and the feasibility of the measures planned for emergency response. Exercises consist of solving tasks and operations during simulated events that approximate as closely as possible the response to a real event.
Exercises, in terms of their scope and the number of elements of the emergency response organisation involved, are divided into:
- Drills – one component of the license holder’s emergency response organisation is trained and one sub-activity is practiced
- Shift exercise – involving the serving shift, which practices a given situation according to a pre-prepared scenario
- an on-site exercise – the entire emergency response organisation of the license holder is involved
- Interoperability exercise – involving the license holder’s emergency response organisation + external organisations and government authorities
Transport Incident Exercise – is an exercise of the radioactive materials transport authorisation holder and involves its emergency response organisation with external organisations and the government administration concerned.
International Exercises
Every year, the ÚJD SR participates in a number of international exercises organised by international organisations active in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, as well as in exercises of other states. The international exercises are primarily aimed at testing and assessing the ability of individual Member States to respond promptly to radiation events with transboundary implications arising from the requirements of international treaties and conventions, as well as from membership in the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
International exercises are regularly organised by the European Commission (ECUREX exercises) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (ConvEx exercises). Certain aspects of emergency response are also practised in the framework of OECD/NEA exercises (INEX exercises), possibly with neighbouring countries.
