Slovakia is attending the Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety in Vienna
The delegation of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (ÚJD SR) is currently participating in the 10th Review Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS), which is taking place from 13 to 24 April 2026 with the participation of 98 Parties.
The meeting is an important international forum where the Parties to the Convention, including Slovakia, present the implementation of the provisions of the Convention, defend the national reports prepared within the current review cycle in 2025, and also conduct a peer review of the functioning of national frameworks for nuclear safety. Review Meetings are held every three years.
The course of the Review Meeting includes plenary sessions and Country Groups, in which national reports on the Convention on Nuclear Safety and compliance with the provisions of the Convention are discussed. Major Common Issues that are relevant to all states are formulated, while examples of Good Practices and Areas of Good Performance or Challenges and Suggestions for further improvement are identified in the groups.
The Slovak delegation is led by Marta Žiaková, Chairperson of ÚJD SR. Slovakia’s presentation was on the agenda on Thursday, April 17, 2026. The presentation was delivered by Martin Pospíšil, Director General of the Department of Regulatory Activities and International Relations of ÚJD SR, and Juraj Homola, Director General of the Department of Safety Evaluation and Inspection Activities of ÚJD SR, and was met with great interest from other participating Contracting Parties. The Slovak delegation also included representatives of the Ministry of Transport of the SR, the Ministry of Economy of the SR, the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the SR, the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Youth of the SR, the Ministry of the Environment of the SR, the Permanent Mission of the SR to the UN, OSCE and other International Organisations in Vienna, the Public Health Authority of the SR, the National Nuclear Fund and the companies JAVYS, a. s., JESS, a. s. and Slovenské elektrárne, a. s.

Slovakia demonstrated a strong commitment to compliance with the Convention on Nuclear Safety. The presentation and subsequent discussion addressed several issues related to, among others, amendments to national legislation, completion of Units 3 and 4 of the Mochovce NPP, quality control at currently operating units, the project of a new NPP in Bohunice site, the impacts of climate change and extraordinary circumstances or additional measures in the field of emergency preparedness in the context of the war in Ukraine.
The Convention on Nuclear Safety, as an internationally binding document in the field of nuclear safety, was developed with the aim of formulating the basic organizational, technical and legislative requirements for ensuring a high level of nuclear safety worldwide. In the national report, each contracting party reports on the measures it has taken or is taking to implement each of the obligations contained in the articles of the Convention. The Convention entered into force for Slovakia on 24 October 1996. Currently, 105 countries and EURATOM are parties to the Convention.
