What is INES?

The international scale of nuclear and radiological events "INES" (International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale) was created to help the public understand the seriousness of events, particularly incidents and accidents at nuclear power plants.

Currently the assessment based on this scale is extended to events involving radioactive sources, sources of ionizing radiation and with the transport of sources and radioactive material.
The reason for introducing this scale was flawed interpretation of certain events at nuclear power plants and the public had not reliable guidance to assess their actual importance in relation to their own safety. Events at nuclear power plants and nuclear installations are evaluated against three essential criteria, namely:

  1. Impact on people and on the environment
  2. Impact on radiological barriers and control of devices, which handles considerable quantities of radioactive material
  3. Impact on defence in depth
