On September 5, 2019 Slovakia has submitted the nomination of Dr. Marta Žiaková, Chairperson of the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority, to the position of the IAEA Director General. The nomination was submitted to the hands of the Chairperson of the IAEA Board of Governors.
Slovakia is a steadfast supporter of the IAEA and of the benefits it provides in the area of peaceful use of nuclear energy. Slovakia actively participates in the IAEA activities and continues to assist the Agency in the fulfilments of its mandate and statutory function both on political as well as expert level. The candidacy of Dr. Žiaková to this important position has been endorsed by Slovak Government, based on its firm conviction and confidence in her professional competence, exceptional leadership and managerial skills and expertise. Furthermore the nomination also represents a concrete contribution of Slovakia to the joint commitment of promoting qualified female experts to the high-level senior positions. Dr. Žiaková is an internationally recognized expert and commands extensive experience and expertise in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.
After the passing away of the DG Amano, the IAEA Board of Governors decided on electing the new Director General at its extraordinary session tentatively scheduled for October 2019. The appointed candidate must be subsequently confirmed by the IAEA General Conference. The Board expects the new DG to take office in January 2020. A total of 4 nominations for the position of Director General had been submitted – Argentina, Burkina Faso, Romania, Slovakia.
