This week, from 16 - 20 September 2019, an annual regular session of the IAEA General Conference was held in Vienna. At the outset of the conference, Chairperson of the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Mme. Marta Žiaková, in her position of outgoing President of the 62nd session of the General Conference handed over the presidency to Her Excellency Ambassador Alicia Buenrostro Massieu, Permanent Representative of Mexico who was elected as its 63rd President.
Mme. Žiaková, as the Head of the Slovak delegation, delivered national statement in which she briefly informed about recent developments in construction of 3rd and 4th units at the nuclear power plant in Mochovce. She has also outlined the most recent legislative changes in the national framework as well as the activities of Slovakia conducted in the areas of n nuclear power, science, applications and technologies. In her statement, Mme. Chair further highlighted the role and contribution of the IAEA through and the assistance it provides to Member States in meeting their national priorities and objectives in the agenda of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Slovakia has also reaffirmed its lasting support to the Agency and its proactive participation in fulfilling the IAEA’s mandate, including through both financial and human contributions.
On the side of the conference, Mme. Žiaková has met bilaterally with 25 delegations to introduce her candidature to the position of the IAEA Director General and to shortly present her mission statement. She has also met with the representatives of the European Commission, Belarus and Lithuania to discuss the status of implementation of recommendations identified at stress tests conducted at the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. Representatives of ÚJD SR have met with their partners from Slovenia, Hungary and Czech Republic in a regular quadrilateral format.
