TECHNOLOGY FOR TREATMENT AND CONDITIONING OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE BOHUNICE
Nuclear facility “Technology for treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste Bohunice” is performing the treatment and conditioning of low and intermediate level waste and consists of Bohunice conditioning centre (BSC) and Bituminisation facilities PS 44 and PS 100. The cementation facility KWU which is at present prepared for decommissioning is also part of this nuclear facility. The commissioning of individual technologies, e.g. cementation, concentrate evaporation, fragmentation, segregation and incineration at the BSC is going on. The final BSC´s product is radioactive waste immobilised in fibre reinforced concrete container, e.g. waste package. The waste package has to comply with the technical specifications for safe operation of RU RAW Mochovce approved by UJD on the base of safety analyses. The bituminisation facilities PS 44 and PS 100 were in operation or in commissioning respectively.
Volumes of treated and conditioned radioactive wastes at SE-VYZ in 2000 are given in tab. 7.2 and 7.3.

Assessment activity was focused on BSC´s trial operation phase 1 of commissioning evaluation review and on approval of safety documentation for phase 2 of BSC´s commissioning. The safety documentation for bituminisation facility PS 100 was also assessed. In 2000 no event was registered according to the INES scale at the facilities for treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste.
Inspection activity of UJD was focused on observation of nuclear safety in the process of radioactive waste treatment and waste packages production and on the reduction of fire risk of concentrate bituminisation process. In 2000 there were 5 inspections altogether of which 3 inspections at BSC and 2 inspections at bituminisations facilities. Measures imposed were focused on improvement of technical specifications for handling with non-standard radioactive waste.
NATIONAL RADIOACTIVE WASTE REPOSITORY MOCHOVCE
National radioactive waste repository Mochovce is determined for disposal of low and intermediate level waste packages. In June 2000 the active tests were started by the operator of this nuclear installation when the first containers with radioactive waste were disposed. At the end of 2000 seven containers have been disposed and the routine activities focused in particular on operational environmental monitoring have been performed. During the repository commissioning neither Limits and Conditions of safe operation were violated nor event occurred.
UJD evaluated safety documentation submitted by repository operator as a fulfilment of individual conditions from decision on the approval for commissioning:
- Report on back-filling of intermediate spaces in storage boxes
- Completion of programme of geotechnical stability monitoring including erosion monitoring and criteria for corrective measures
Completion of pre-operational safety documentation - part focused on sensitivity and uncertainty analyses for parameters influencing radionuclides release and near field and far field interactions
UJD paid attention also to additional documentation on the basis of which the operator applied for changes of limits and conditions of repository safe operation.

During the routine and special inspections, the activity was oriented towards regular surveillance of repository active tests process in accordance with conditions from UJD approval for this nuclear installation commissioning. A team inspection was concentrated to recent commissioning process and review of status of containers with radioactive waste. Measures have been oriented to realisation of precautions concerning containers lifetime evaluation, safety assessment and preparation of documentation necessary for issuing of approval for repository operation.
NUCLEAR FACILITIES OF VUJE TRNAVA
Waste management nuclear facilities owned by VUJE Trnava are installed at the site Jaslovské Bohunice - experimental incinerator with cementation equipment and bituminisation facility. The last one was not operated during 2000, but experimental evaluation of measures for reduction of fire risk of all other bituminisation facilities on the site is under preparation as well as the contract for dowtherm bituminisation in combination with concentrates. Burnable waste produced by NPPs V-1 and A-1 Bohunice was treated at incinerator; model experiments were carried out at cementation equipment with the aim to prepare procedures for cementation of sludge from NPP A-1 Bohunice at BSC.
Inspections were focused on the declaration of treated / conditioned waste parameters and on the safety of waste management as well as on safety culture while treating RAW.
