The term Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials represents a set of technical regime and organizational provisions necessary to prevent non-authorized activities concerning nuclear installations, nuclear materials, special materials, management of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel, transport of radioactive materials as well as non-authorized penetration into the nuclear installation and sabotage acts.
The commitment of the Slovak Republic in the area of physical protection result from the accession to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials (INFCIRC 274/rev.1), which was signed by the Government of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic on February 8, 1987 and by the governmental resolution of the Slovak Republic No. 394/2007 the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials was approved. The Amendment reflects better current situation of security over the world and is narrowly linked with an „International Agreement on Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism“, which was accepted on April 15, 2006 on General Assembly of UNO by the resolution No. 59/290. The Slovak Republic was the first country, which ratified this document.
Requirements imposed to the physical protection of nuclear materials and nuclear facilities for the Slovak Republic are set down by Atomic Act as amended and by decree prepared by Nuclear Regulatory Authority No. 51/2006 on details concerning assurance of physical protection.
UJD SR focuses supervisory activities in this area on control of physical protection at nuclear installations in the Slovak Republic and performs inspections targeted to the physical protection of nuclear installations, nuclear materials, and radioactive waste and transport of nuclear materials.
The most important task in the area of international co-operation regarding the international importance and possibilities of technical co-operation and assistance is represented by the co-operation with IAEA resident in Vienna.
