Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (thereinafter UJD SR) as a central authority of state administrative was originally, with effectiveness, established on January 1st, 1993 by the law No. 2/1993 on organization of governmental activity and on organization of state administrative as amended later , which was one of revisions of the act No. 347/1990.

It was set down by the paragraph 21 that Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic was the central authority of state administrative for the area of nuclear supervision. UJD SR ensures the execution of the state supervision upon nuclear safety of nuclear installations including supervision upon treatment of radioactive waste, nuclear spent fuel and further stages of fuel cycle, as well as upon nuclear materials including their control and accountancy. It ensures review of plans concerning programmes of nuclear energy use and quality of selected equipment of nuclear technology devices and commitments of the Slovak Republic resulting from international agreements related to the nuclear safety of nuclear installations and treatment of nuclear materials. Originally the chairman of UJD SR used to be nominated and recalled by the president of the Slovak republic based on the proposal of the Slovak Government.

Former law No. 347/1990 as amended later was replaced on January 1st, 2002 by the law No. 575/2001 on organization of governmental activity and on organization of state administrative as amended later. According to this law the establishment of UJD SR is set down in § 29 in an identical wording as it was in preceding law with a difference that the chairman of the Office is nominated and recalled by the government of the Slovak Republic. Legal status fixed by the law No. 575/2001 since January 1st, 2002 related to UJD SR has been lasting up today without change.
UJD SR is a legal person and as to the financial management rules of state budgetary organization management are applied; it has an independent chapter in the state budget, does not have subordinated organizations on county and district level and it is not a founder of any state budgetary or state budgetary contribution organizations or any other legal persons.
