Powers and competences of UJD SR can be divided to general ones (sectional, or common) which refer to all ministries and further central authorities of state administrative; these are according to § 35 to § 39 of the law No. 575/2001 as amended later and special powers and competences, which are executed exclusively by UJD SR according to the separate regulations, particularly it is law No. 541/2004 on peaceful use of nuclear energy (Atomic Act) as amended later and some other laws.
General and common tasks
In frame of fulfilment of general and common tasks UJD SR within its sphere of actions participates in the establishment of unified state policy , accomplishes this policy, executes state administration and fulfils further tasks set down in constitution laws, laws and other generally binding legal regulations. In frame of specified scope of powers it is also responsible for tasks related to the defence as well as for creation of conditions necessary for realization of requirements concerning assurance of preparation for defence and protection.
UJD SR within its sphere of actions ensures also that tasks related to negotiations and execution of international agreements , development of international relations and international co-operation including tasks resulting from international agreements and membership of the Slovak Republic in international organizations.
Also in frame of its sphere of action UJD SR ensures realization of assistance provided by European Union and is responsible for management of financial means provided within this assistance and concerning authorities of European Community and Europe Union it fulfils information and reporting duty, which results from legally binding acts of these authorities
In relation to preceding sphere of action UJD SR takes care of an appropriate legal arrangement of matters under its responsibility. It prepares proposals of laws and other generally binding documents, publishes them and after their hearing during review procedure submits them to the Government; it also takes care of observation of legality in the area of its responsibility.
Special competences
Special competences of UJD SR are specified particularly by § 4 of Atomic Act as amended later.
